Northwest Territories

The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada, located in the northern part of the country. Its capital is Yellowknife, which serves as the administrative and economic centre of the territory. The Northwest Territories covers a vast area of approximately 1.3-million square kilometres, making it one of the largest subnational jurisdictions in North America, though it has a small population of around 45 000 people. The economy is heavily driven by mining, particularly diamond mining, which has become a cornerstone industry since the discovery of diamonds in the 1990s. Major diamond mines, including Ekati and Diavik, have positioned the territory as a significant global diamond producer. Other important economic sectors include oil and gas exploration, tourism and traditional activities such as hunting and trapping. The territory is governed by a consensus-style legislative assembly rather than a party-based system, reflecting its unique political culture. The Northwest Territories shares borders with Yukon to the west, Nunavut to the east, and the provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan to the south. The region's resource wealth, particularly in diamonds and minerals, continues to attract investment and drive economic development, though the territory faces challenges related to its remote location, harsh climate and the need to balance resource extraction with environmental stewardship and Indigenous rights.
