Natural Resources Canada

Natural Resources Canada is the federal government department responsible for natural resources, energy, minerals and metals, forests, earth sciences, mapping and remote sensing. The department develops policies and programmes to ensure the responsible development and use of Canada's natural resources and the competitiveness of Canada's natural resources products. It has jurisdiction over the country's mining sector, including critical minerals strategy, exploration and development policy, and environmental standards for resource extraction. Natural Resources Canada administers funding programmes to support innovation, decarbonisation and electrification in the mining industry, including grants for zero-emission mining equipment and battery-electric vehicle adoption. The department works closely with provincial and territorial governments, as Natural Resources Canada holds constitutional authority over natural resources within their borders, while the federal department coordinates national policy, trade and research. It also maintains the Canadian Forest Service, the Geological Survey of Canada and the Canada Centre for Mapping and Earth Observation. Natural Resources Canada collaborates with industry bodies such as the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada on sector development and competitiveness. The department was established in 1995 through the merger of the former Department of Energy, Mines and Resources with parts of the Department of Forestry.
