Mokopane

Mokopane is a city in Limpopo province, South Africa, and serves as the administrative and commercial centre of the Waterberg District Municipality. The city lies approximately 220 km north of Pretoria and is strategically positioned along the N1 highway, the main transport corridor linking Gauteng to Zimbabwe. Mokopane has a population of around 30 000 in the urban core, with a broader municipal area exceeding 250 000 residents. The local economy is anchored by mining, agriculture and related services, with significant platinum-group metals deposits in the surrounding Bushveld Complex driving investment and employment. Major mining operations in the area include the Platreef project, which is developing one of the world's largest undeveloped platinum, palladium, nickel, copper and gold resources. Agriculture focuses on citrus, vegetables and livestock, supported by irrigation from the Mokolo River. The city hosts regional government offices, retail centres and logistics facilities serving the wider Waterberg region. Mokopane was known as Potgietersrus until 2003, when it was renamed in honour of the nineteenth-century Langa chief Mokopane, who resisted colonial expansion.
