Luderitz

Lüderitz is a coastal city in the ǁKaras Region of southern Namibia, situated on the Atlantic Ocean. The city serves as a key port and has a population of about 13 000 people. Lüderitz is located in a remote, arid area characterised by strong winds and sparse vegetation, but its harbour has historically supported fishing, diamond mining and maritime trade. The city's economy has traditionally been anchored by diamond extraction in the surrounding Sperrgebiet restricted area and by commercial fishing, particularly rock lobster and other marine resources. In recent years Lüderitz has emerged as a focal point for Namibia's green hydrogen ambitions, with large-scale renewable energy projects planned to exploit the region's exceptional wind and solar resources. The city's port infrastructure and access to seawater for desalination make it strategically important for the production and export of green hydrogen and green ammonia. Lüderitz is also known for its German colonial architecture, a legacy of the early twentieth-century German South West Africa period. The city's isolation and harsh climate have historically constrained growth, but the energy transition is positioning Lüderitz as a potential hub for clean energy investment and industrial development in southern Africa.
