Lily Mine

Lily Mine is an underground gold mine located near Barberton in Mpumalanga province, South Africa. The mine is operated by Vantage Goldfields and has been in operation for several decades, extracting gold from the Barberton Greenstone Belt, one of the world's oldest geological formations. Lily Mine gained national prominence in February 2016 when a lamproom and office container collapsed into an underground void, trapping three workers—Pretty Nkambule, Yvonne Mnisi and Solomon Nyirenda—who remain entombed. The disaster led to prolonged legal battles, investigations by the South African Human Rights Commission, and calls for criminal prosecution by the National Prosecuting Authority. Mining operations were suspended following the incident, and the site became the focus of intense scrutiny regarding mine safety standards and regulatory oversight by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources. The tragedy has been cited repeatedly in parliamentary debates and ministerial statements by Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe as a case study in mine safety failures. Recovery efforts to retrieve the bodies have been hampered by technical challenges and safety concerns, leaving the families without closure for years. The mine's future remains uncertain, with ongoing legal and regulatory proceedings determining its fate. Lily Mine stands as a stark reminder of the human cost of inadequate safety measures in South Africa's mining sector.
