Iron-ore

Iron-ore is a mineral commodity from which metallic iron can be economically extracted and is the primary raw material used in steel production. The ore consists of iron oxides and other minerals found in rock formations, with the most commercially important types being hematite and magnetite. Iron-ore is one of the most widely traded bulk commodities in the world, with major producing regions including Australia, Brazil, China, India and South Africa. The Pilbara region of Western Australia is one of the world's most significant iron-ore provinces, hosting large-scale mining operations that supply global markets. Iron-ore is typically extracted through openpit mining methods, then crushed, processed and transported to ports for export to steel mills. The commodity's price is influenced by global steel demand, particularly from China, which consumes the majority of seaborne iron-ore. Steel produced from iron-ore is essential to construction, manufacturing, automotive and infrastructure industries worldwide. The iron-ore mining sector faces growing pressure to reduce carbon emissions, as steel production is one of the largest industrial sources of greenhouse gases. Producers are increasingly investing in decarbonisation technologies and renewable energy to reduce the environmental footprint of iron-ore extraction and processing. The industry's economic significance makes it a cornerstone of resource-dependent economies such as Australia and Brazil.
