Great Dyke

The Great Dyke is a linear geological formation running approximately 550 km through the centre of Zimbabwe from north to south. It is one of the world's most significant layered igneous intrusions, formed around 2.5-billion years ago during the Archaean eon. The dyke ranges from 3 km to 12 km in width and contains some of the planet's richest deposits of platinum-group metals (PGMs), chromium and nickel. Zimbabwe's chromite reserves, concentrated in the Great Dyke, are among the largest globally, making the formation a cornerstone of the country's mining economy. The geological structure consists of four main complexes – Musengezi, Hartley, Selukwe and Wedza – each hosting economically viable mineral deposits. Chromite seams within the Great Dyke supply feedstock for ferrochrome production, a critical input for stainless steel manufacturing. The formation also holds substantial platinum and palladium resources, which have attracted international mining investment. Its strategic importance has grown with the global energy transition, as PGMs are essential for catalytic converters, hydrogen fuel cells and other clean-energy technologies. The Great Dyke remains central to Zimbabwe's export earnings and to southern Africa's position in global critical-minerals supply chains.
