Google is a multinational technology company specialising in Internet-related services and products, including search, cloud computing, software and hardware. The company is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and operates globally across more than 50 countries. Google is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, the holding company created in 2015 to separate Google's core search and advertising business from its other ventures. Its dominant product is the Google Search engine, which commands the majority of global search traffic and generates most of the company's revenue through advertising. Other major products include the Android mobile operating system, YouTube, Google Cloud, Google Maps, the Chrome browser and a range of hardware devices including Pixel smartphones and Nest smart-home products. Google is one of the world's most valuable companies by market capitalisation and employs more than 180 000 people worldwide. The company's business model centres on data-driven advertising, though it has diversified into enterprise cloud services, consumer hardware and artificial intelligence. Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University, and it went public in 2004.
