Goodluck Jonathan

Goodluck Jonathan is a Nigerian politician who served as president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015. He assumed the presidency in May 2010 following the death of President Umaru Yar'Adua, having previously served as vice-president from 2007. Jonathan was elected to a full term in April 2011, becoming the first president from the Niger Delta region and the first from the Ijaw ethnic group. His presidency focused on economic development, infrastructure investment and efforts to address the Boko Haram insurgency in north-eastern Nigeria, though security challenges intensified during his tenure. Jonathan's administration oversaw Nigeria's emergence as Africa's largest economy following a GDP rebasing exercise in 2014. He conceded defeat in the March 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari, marking the first democratic transfer of power between political parties in Nigeria's history. Since leaving office, Jonathan has remained active in African diplomacy, serving as a mediator and election observer for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union. He has been involved in peace processes and electoral monitoring missions across the continent, including in Guinea-Bissau, Mali and other West African nations. Jonathan holds a doctorate in zoology and worked as a lecturer and environmental protection officer before entering politics. His post-presidential role as an elder statesman has seen him advocate for democratic governance and peaceful conflict resolution across Africa.
