ESG

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) is a framework for evaluating corporate performance and investment risk across three pillars of nonfinancial criteria. The environmental pillar examines a company's impact on natural systems, including carbon emissions, energy efficiency, water use, waste management and biodiversity protection. The social pillar assesses relationships with employees, suppliers, customers and communities, covering labour practices, health and safety, diversity and inclusion, human rights and community engagement. The governance pillar evaluates leadership structures, board composition, executive compensation, shareholder rights, transparency and business ethics. ESG metrics have become central to investment decision-making, corporate reporting and stakeholder expectations across all sectors, with mining, energy and manufacturing facing particularly intense scrutiny owing to their environmental footprints and community impacts. Investors use ESG ratings and disclosures to identify risks, compare performance and allocate capital, whilst regulators in many jurisdictions now mandate ESG reporting. Companies integrate ESG considerations into strategy to manage reputational risk, secure financing, attract talent and maintain their social licence to operate. The framework has evolved from voluntary corporate social responsibility initiatives in the late twentieth century into a standardised, data-driven discipline underpinned by reporting standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative, the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures. Critics argue that inconsistent methodologies, greenwashing and the lack of universal standards limit ESG's effectiveness, whilst proponents see it as essential to long-term value creation and the transition to a sustainable economy.
