Emmerson Mnangagwa

Emmerson Mnangagwa is the president of Zimbabwe, having assumed office in November 2017 following the resignation of Robert Mugabe. He is a Zimbabwean politician and former intelligence chief who rose to power through the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front (Zanu-PF). Mnangagwa's path to the presidency was marked by decades of service in Zimbabwe's security apparatus and government, including roles as Minister of State Security and Minister of Justice. He served as vice-president under Mugabe from 2014 until his dismissal in November 2017, an event that precipitated a military intervention and Mugabe's eventual departure. Known by the nickname "the Crocodile", Mnangagwa has positioned himself as a reformist leader seeking to attract foreign investment and re-engage with the international community after years of Zimbabwe's economic isolation. His presidency has been characterised by efforts to revive Zimbabwe's struggling economy, though his administration has faced criticism over human rights concerns and the pace of democratic reform. Mnangagwa recurs in regional coverage due to Zimbabwe's strategic position in southern Africa and its economic challenges, including currency instability and the need for infrastructure development. He has participated in regional forums such as the African Union and engaged with the New Partnership for Africa's Development agenda. Before entering politics, Mnangagwa was involved in Zimbabwe's liberation struggle, which shaped his long-standing connections within the ruling party and security establishment.
