Emeralds

Emeralds are precious gemstones belonging to the beryl mineral family, prized for their vivid green colour caused by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. They rank among the four traditional precious stones alongside diamonds, rubies and sapphires, and have been valued since ancient times for their rarity and beauty. The finest emeralds exhibit a pure verdant green to bluish-green hue with high transparency and are considered more valuable per carat than many other gemstones. Major emerald-producing countries include Colombia, Zambia, Brazil and Afghanistan, with Zambia's Copperbelt region hosting some of the world's most significant deposits. The gemstones form in metamorphic and igneous rocks under specific geological conditions involving beryllium-rich fluids. Emeralds are typically more included than other precious stones, with internal fractures and inclusions known in the trade as jardin (French for garden), which are generally accepted as part of the stone's character. The gems are cut in various styles, most commonly the rectangular step cut known as the emerald cut, designed to showcase colour while protecting the stone's edges. Commercial emerald mining involves both large-scale industrial operations and artisanal mining, with the stones sorted and graded based on colour, clarity, cut and carat weight. The global emerald market serves jewellery manufacture, collectors and investors, with prices varying widely based on quality and origin.
