Eastern Europe

Eastern Europe is a geographical and geopolitical region comprising the eastern portion of the European continent. The region's boundaries are not universally agreed upon and have shifted over time, but it typically includes countries such as Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, the Baltic states, and parts of the former Soviet Union. Historically, the term gained prominence during the Cold War to describe the socialist states aligned with the Soviet Union, in contrast to Western Europe's capitalist democracies. Since the fall of the Iron Curtain in 1989 and the subsequent dissolution of the Soviet Union, many Eastern European countries have undergone significant political and economic transformation, transitioning to market economies and democratic governance. Several nations in the region have joined the European Union and NATO, integrating more closely with Western European institutions. The region is characterised by diverse cultures, languages and historical experiences, ranging from Slavic to Baltic and Balkan influences. Economically, Eastern Europe has emerged as an important destination for foreign investment, manufacturing and retail expansion, offering lower labour costs and growing consumer markets compared to Western Europe. The region's retail and commercial property sectors have attracted international operators seeking growth opportunities. Eastern Europe continues to play a strategic role in European energy security, trade corridors and regional stability.
