Construction Industry Development Board

The Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) is a statutory body established in South Africa to regulate and develop the country's construction and built environment sector. The board operates under the Construction Industry Development Board Act of 2000 and falls within the portfolio of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure. Its mandate encompasses promoting the growth, competitiveness and improved performance of the construction industry while ensuring best practice in delivery and procurement. The CIDB maintains a national register of contractors and projects, grading contractors according to their financial and technical capacity across nine classes. It develops and enforces standards for construction procurement, health and safety, and quality management across public-sector projects. The organisation plays a central role in transformation initiatives aimed at increasing participation by historically disadvantaged individuals and small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) in construction. It provides industry intelligence through research and data collection on construction activity, employment and economic contribution. The board also administers training and development programmes to address skills shortages and improve professionalism within the sector. Since its establishment, the CIDB has become a key institution in efforts to standardise procurement practices, combat corruption and fraud in public construction contracts, and support the sustainable development of South Africa's built environment.
