Bureau Of Land Management

The Bureau of Land Management is a United States federal agency within the Department of the Interior responsible for administering public lands. The agency manages approximately 245-million acres of public land, primarily located in 12 western states, including Alaska. Its mandate encompasses multiple-use management of public lands for purposes including energy development, livestock grazing, recreation, timber harvesting and mineral extraction, while also conserving natural, historical and cultural resources. The bureau oversees the permitting and environmental review of mining projects, oil and gas leasing, renewable energy development and other commercial activities on federal land. It operates through a network of state and field offices that conduct environmental assessments, issue permits and monitor compliance with federal land-use regulations. The agency plays a significant role in critical minerals development, particularly lithium and other battery materials essential to electric vehicle production, by reviewing project applications and coordinating with other federal agencies such as the US Fish and Wildlife Service. The Bureau of Land Management also manages wild horse and burro populations, administers the federal coal leasing programme and oversees rights-of-way for pipelines, transmission lines and other infrastructure crossing public lands. The agency was established in 1946 through the merger of the General Land Office and the Grazing Service.
