Boeing is an American multinational aerospace manufacturer and defence contractor headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. The company designs, manufactures and sells commercial jetliners, military aircraft, satellites, missile defence systems, human spaceflight vehicles and launch systems worldwide. Boeing operates through three main divisions: Commercial Airplanes, Defense, Space & Security, and Global Services. It is one of the world's two dominant manufacturers of large commercial aircraft, competing primarily with Europe's Airbus. The company's commercial aircraft portfolio includes the 737 narrow-body family, the 767, 777 and 787 wide-body families, and the 747 jumbo jet. Boeing employs approximately 170,000 people across the United States and in more than 65 countries. The company generates annual revenue exceeding $60-billion and is a component of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Principal subsidiaries and divisions include Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Defense, Space & Security, and Jeppesen, a provider of aviation navigation services. Boeing was founded in 1916 by William Boeing in Seattle, Washington, and has grown through numerous mergers and acquisitions, most notably its 1997 merger with McDonnell Douglas, which consolidated much of the US aerospace industry.
