Bahia

Bahia is a state in north-eastern Brazil with its capital at Salvador. The state has a population of about 15-million people and is the fourth most populous in Brazil. Bahia's economy is driven by agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism and services, with significant production of cocoa, soy, cotton and tropical fruits. The state is rich in mineral resources and hosts deposits of nickel, copper, gold, iron ore, chromite and industrial minerals. Bahia is home to several large-scale mining operations and has attracted international investment in critical minerals projects linked to the global energy transition. The port of Salvador and other coastal facilities support export-oriented industries including petrochemicals and pulp. Bahia's mining sector has expanded in recent years with the development of nickel laterite deposits in the interior of the state. The state government has promoted mining and agribusiness as pillars of economic development. Bahia covers an area of about 565,000 square kilometres, making it the fifth-largest Brazilian state by area.
