Antofagasta

Antofagasta is a Chilean copper mining company headquartered in Santiago, Chile, with operations primarily in Chile and exploration activities in other regions. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. Antofagasta is controlled by the Luksic family through their investment vehicle Quiñenco. The company operates four major copper mining operations in Chile: Los Pelambres, Centinela, Antucoya and Zaldívar, which together produce hundreds of thousands of tonnes of copper annually. In addition to copper, Antofagasta's operations produce significant by-products including molybdenum and gold. The company is one of the world's top ten copper producers and plays a significant role in global copper supply. Antofagasta also operates a rail and road cargo business in northern Chile through its transport division. The company employs thousands of workers across its operations and maintains a substantial capital expenditure programme focused on sustaining production and developing new resources. Antofagasta was founded in 1888 as the Antofagasta (Chili) and Bolivia Railway Company and evolved over more than a century from a railway operator into a major mining group, formally adopting its current focus on copper mining in the late twentieth century.
