JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed African Potash chairperson Chris Cleverly has met with Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and a delegation of officials in Kampala, Uganda, to discuss potential opportunities to develop a fertiliser industry in the country, the company confirmed on Friday.

“As part of our strategy to aggressively expand our fertiliser business throughout the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (Comesa) region, we continue to look at opportunities for developing a profitable and scalable fertiliser trading operation across Africa.

“We were delighted to be invited by President Museveni to discuss potential opportunities for cooperating in the future with regards to investment in fertilisers. I look forward to providing further updates in due course regarding our ongoing discussions, as appropriate,” said Cleverly.

African Potash has a trading agreement with Comesa, a free trade union for 20 African member States, to supply and deliver at least 500 000 t of fertilisers on a yearly basis to offtakers identified and introduced by the region.

The company also operates the Lac Dinga project, in the Republic of Congo, which is prospective for potash – a key source of potassium fertiliser.
