“It’s DUE” – Develop, Unite, Empower is the theme of the women & leadership programmes organised by Pinpoint Stewards. The Women and Leadership in Mining Conference will feature South African women in mining speakers to specifically showcase local talent.

“The conference will take place on August 30 and 31, 2022, in Johannesburg at the Indaba Hotel, Fourways, bringing together hundreds of women in the mining sector to not only recognize current leaders making headlines, but to discover new upcoming leaders within the sector" says Pinpoint Stewards Director Sudhira Sewsunker.

Mining Weekly were one of the first media partners to back the women-owned company and ensure equal reporting in spotlighting women leaders and aspiring leaders in mining.

Why the need for such a conference

Minerals Council South Africa and its members have announced “stretch targets, to double the percentage of women in mining by 2025, towards a 30% to 40% representation across industry and 50% in management over the next decade”.  Pinpoint Stewards support the initiative and will  be bringing women in the industry together to not only increase dialogue in how to reach the “stretch targets” but also increase networking and highlight career opportunities within the mining sector.

Four of the mining companies speaking at the conference are included in the “2022 Bloomberg Gender Equality Index” and they will share their insights: Dineo Phaladi-Magwaza - one of the first female mine overseers and currently the Mine Modernisation Specialist, Group Mining, Anglo American, will speak on the modernization of mining and how wo/man and machine can work side-by-side.  Two exceptional women from Exxaro Resources, Dr Annamaré Wolmarans, Manager: Information Management and Moshibudi Mokgashi, Manager, Mining Development, P&O will respectively discuss how to be a mentor and what to look for in a mentor and discuss what it means to have more women occupy critical leadership positions, both Dr Wolmarans and Mokgashi attained a “Modernization Hero’s award”. Nandi Sibanyoni, Executive Head, SHEPS, Anglo American - Kumba Iron Ore will discuss women’s contribution to a sustainable mining industry, she achieved 100% injury free days during her reign and has mentored many young professionals.

Interventions undertaken by industry to fight gender-based violence (GBV) and harassment in the workplace will also be addressed by Dr Annelie Gildenhuys, Director, Aequitas Consulting Pty Ltd. and she will discuss how mines can assess their mining infrastructure and reporting mechanisms to prevent misconduct against women.

Selected beneficiaries will receive a percentage of profits from the conference organisers – they include Lighthouse Baby Shelter, WiMSA and Exit Survivor Foundation.  Pinpoint Stewards supports the fight against GBV and also ensures opportunities for women through supporting mentorship initiatives.

Pinpoint Stewards, an all women-owned level two B-BBEE company, will aim to make the conference available to all universities and high schools, connection through video conferencing, as part of supporting young women to lead and choose a career in mining. Interested parties are invited to make contact.
