London-listed emerging emerald miner URA Holdings has announced trial mining and processing activities at the Gravelotte emerald mine, in Limpopo, can start as soon as six to eight months from now.

The company advised on September 6 that the Phase 1 processing plant at the historical mine has reached 60% completion, with more equipment sourcing under way.

URA last week raised £240 000 through a placing and subscription to buy critical equipment and machinery required for the restart of the Gravelotte mine.

Among the equipment ordered is a custom-made optical sorter, following test work at Angelon Electronics, in China. Angelon has designed the optical sorter based on extensive test work having been conducted at another facility in Germany, to determine an optimal recovery method for emeralds.

“I am delighted to report that we continue to make good progress with restarting emerald mining operations at Gravelotte.

“We were impressed with the test-work results, quality, price and delivery time of the Angelon optical sorted following our visit to their facility in China and are happy to report that we have placed our order with them,” comments URA chairperson Edward Nealon.

Gravelotte was the biggest emerald mine globally in the 1950s and 1960s, with 113-million carats having been recovered over its lifespan from 1929 to 2002.

URA identified 29-million carats of contained emeralds in what had been the project’s first-ever code-compliant independent resource.
