JOHANNESBURG – The bodies of three illegal miners – two of them with name tags – have been recovered from a mine in Welkom and the South African Police Service (SAPS) are appealing to their relatives of the deceased to come forward.

On Wednesday SAPS called for assistance to locate families of the dead illegal miners – also known as “Zama-Zamas” – whose bodies were found underground by Eland mine employees on Monday 19 September 2016.

Captain Stephen Thakeng said two bodies were found with the names “Chengarai Madhuka” and “Paballo Khojane” on them. The third body remains unidentified.

“The bodies are still lying at the Welkom Government Mortuary. No one has come forward to claim and identify the bodies,” said Thakeng. It is thought the named deceased are from Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

Police are requesting anyone who knows the persons by the names mentioned to contact Detective Constable Von Sefole of Welkom Detective Services or visit him at the offices of the Detectives in Jan Hofmeyer road.
