Anglo American’s decision to go the full solar energy route at its copper mines in Chile emphases the need for South Africa’s Integrated Resource Plan to accommodate the outreach to the sun to generate wonderfully clean electricity. The added benefit for South Africa is that it is done with the help of platinum- group metals that need to be introduced to the world as the magic metals that catalyse clean hydrogen and clean electricity. This is exactly what the modern world needs to fight off climate change and also come down the cost curve. This energy comes in way below the Eskom tariff and cannot be stopped legitimately, in view of the imposition of a carbon tax.
