THE OUTLIER

When a mining company is international, it has the advantage of being able to compare jurisdictions and performance. One company which has done that graphically for the past two quarters is AngloGold Ashanti, and the performance of South African gold mines within its constellation of 19 operations in nine countries remains very poor in dollar terms. AngloGold’s Geita mine, in Tanzania, knocks the deep, dark and dangerous West Wits and Vaal River operations into a cocked hat, as do the company’s mines in the Americas and Australia. One wonders what would become of some of the South African outliers without the help of the weak rand.
