Name: Savage River mine.

Location: The Savage River mine is located 100 km south-west of Burnie, in north-west Tasmania, in Australia.

Mine Owner/s: Grange Resources.

Brief Description: The Savage River magnetite iron-ore mine is a long-life mining asset, comprising the North, Central and South pits. The mine has a projected mine life of more than 30 years.

Brief History: The Savage River mine was discovered in 1887.

The pellet-producing operation started in 1967 and comprises a mine, concentrator, pipeline and pelletising plant.

Grange Resources acquired complete ownership of Savage River through its merger with Australian Bulk Minerals in 2009.

Products: Iron-ore.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Savage River magnetite deposit is situated within and near the eastern margin of the Proterozoic Arthur Metamorphic complex, in north western Tasmania. This complex is exposed along a north-east- to south-west-trending structural corridor, the Arthur Lineament, which separates Proterozoic sedimentary rocks to the north-west from a variety of Palaeozoic rocks to the south-east.

Reserves: Total reserves as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 83.4-million tonnes at 52.5% David Tube Recovery (DTR – a measure of recoverable magnetite), above a cutoff of 15% DTR.

Resources: Total resources as at December 31, 2017, were estimated at 374.4-million tonnes at 47.6% DTR (above a cut-off of 15% DTR)

Mining Method: Conventional opencut, using face shovels and excavators and waste rock removal using haul trucks.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The mine comprises three openpits and processing facilities consist of a primary crusher, concentrator, slurry pipeline and pelletising plant

Prospects: In March 2019, Grange Resources announced that it would spend A$15-million on an exploration decline at the Savage River mine to allow for diamond drilling of the North Pit as part of its  $3.5-million prefeasibility study on the project. The PFS will investigate the possibility of accessing the orebody in the North pit through underground development.
