Minerals Council South Africa CEO Roger Baxter will step down as CEO of the entity when his contract expires in April 2023.

Baxter has led the organisation for nine years through various changes and challenging times, bringing much positive and transformative change, says Minerals Council president Nolitha Fakude.

He served as senior executive for the council from 2012, COO from 2014 and CEO from 2015.

The council has embarked on a recruitment process for a CEO designate, who will support Baxter through to the conclusion of his contract.

Under Baxter’s leadership, the council managed to rebrand and rename for the first time since its establishment as the Chamber of Mines in 1889; elect the first woman president in its history; helped the mining industry to reach a 77% Covid-19 vaccination rate; led the mining sector in achieving its safest year on record in 2019; and drove the debate on climate change and the shared-value community model.

He was part of negotiating teams for the new Mining Charter, the energy policy white paper and skills development legislation. Baxter is also a founding chairperson of the World Platinum Investment Council.

Fakude says that, while there is still much more work that needs to be done on several fronts, there is no doubt that Baxter helped the council to lay a solid foundation in several areas and emerge as one of the most effective business advocacy organisations in South Africa.

Commenting on his resignation, Baxter says it is time to take a break and time for change, for new leadership at the Minerals Council to take the industry to the next level.

Baxter confirms in a statement that plans to still work in the mining industry.
