International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana Mashabane has described the late former President Nelson Mandela as an international icon and a symbol of hope for the oppressed and marginalised people across the globe.

President Jacob Zuma late on Thursday night announced Madiba's passing from the Union Buildings. He said Mandela had passed on peacefully in the company of his family.

Joining South Africans and millions of people from around the world in mourning the death of Madiba, Nkoana Mashabane said he dedicated his life in service of humanity and peace throughout the world.

“Today, we pay tribute to this formidable Statesman’s long history and leading role in, and support for Africa’s struggle for liberation and unity, and outstanding contribution to the creation of a non-racial, non-sexist, democratic South Africa,” said Nkoana Mashabane.

She said Mandela will always be remembered worldwide for his values and dedication to the service of humanity in the fields of conflict resolution, reconciliation, the promotion and protection of the rights of children, gender equality and the uplifting of the poor.

The minister was joined by UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres, who said, Mandela’s passing was a profound loss.

“His extraordinary wisdom, selflessness and compassion not only held South Africa together following the collapse of apartheid, preventing potentially immense displacement, but made him a true global symbol for the oppressed and persecuted, and an example to all of us.

“For a world in which conflicts force millions from their homes every year, the death of such an outstanding champion of peace should give us all pause for thought,” said Guterres.

During his lifetime, Mandela was bestowed with numerous awards and honours, including the Nobel Peace Prize for his dedication to peace and reconciliation.
