This year

marks a major milestone for Johannesburg-based laboratory equipment manufacturer Scientific Engineering; the shareholder-managed company is celebrating its fiftieth year of manufacturing.

During this era, Scientific has seen many technological advancements in all sectors, with the laboratory field being no exception.

“The test of time is no doubt how well we all adapt to this constant innovation and change. At Scientific, we have managed to keep abreast of these developments and have embraced modern manufacturing techniques and systems,” says sales manager Sean Rogers.

Scientific has developed a range of products over the last half century. For example, in the sample preparation arena, the company offers crushers, grinders, filter presses, riffle splitters, drying ovens and furnaces. Other products in its range include platform, orbital and incubating shakers, circulating baths, circulators, steam baths, heatable baths, hot plates, clean air laminar flow benches and trolleys.

The company’s latest additions to its product line-up include a range of stirrers and aluminium hot plates for general laboratory work, as well as water distillers, which offer an effective way of producing distilled water for laboratory testing.

All Scientific’s products are developed and manufactured in South Africa in an International Organisation for Standardisation-accredited facility. Scientific has recently invested in a new fibre-optic laser machine and three new blending machines to improve the quality of its product offering and to speed up its delivery times.

The manufacturer will exhibit at Electra Mining Africa in Hall 9, where it will showcase a range of riffle splitters, filter presses and its 160 ℓ drying oven. The riffle splitter is a sampling device that is used for sample splitting, while filter presses are used for dewatering slurry for general investigation of remnants. The oven is used in a variety of processes, including drying, ageing, curing or for general investigations.

“What makes our products unique is in the simplicity and robustness [of them], which makes a good option for the harsh African environment. “Our engineers, in tandem with our sales team, look at ways of improving products with innovative ideas to make the operators’ daily functioning easier and to speed up the process time,” says Rogers.

Scientific works closely with a dealer network in South Africa, which provides it with a considerable footprint across a range of fields. The firm is currently exporting to 25 different countries and it is considering increasing its footprint.

“Our strategy going forward is to establish our brand further in Africa and we are also looking at developing a footprint into North and South America,” Rogers states.
