The World Gold Council, the market development organisation for the global gold industry, last week elected Randall Oliphant, above, as its new chairperson and, thus, the person tasked with boosting the flagging fortunes of the ancient metal in the investment, jewellery and technology sectors. The 23-member UK-based World Gold Council has operations in India, the Far East and Europe. Oliphant, who heads gold-mining company New Gold of Canada, takes on the role when gold is rising in the consuming East but setting in the investing West.
