Former US President Barack Obama shakes hands with mining magnate Patrice Motsepe during the sixteenth edition of the yearly Nelson Mandela lecture. The event was hosted by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, to honour the centennial of Nelson Mandela’s birth. The Motsepe family is the first family in Africa to join the Giving Pledge, an exemplary commitment founded by Warren Buffett and Bill Gates to donate wealth to philanthropy. Since its inception, the Motsepe family has pledged half of its wealth to improve the living standards of those living in poverty, as well as the unemployed and marginalised within the country, through various projects and initiatives that help beneficiaries become self-sustaining.
