TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – Zinc-focused Trevali Mining on Friday said one contractor was killed and another injured on Thursday in an underground accident, while busy with preparation and development activities in the Magistral South zone of the Santander mine, in Peru.

Trevali said all underground preparation and development activities, except emergency requirements, were suspended immediately and authorities were notified.

Senior operations management was on site and, along with the contract mining team, would work with government authorities to investigate the accident. The company did not say what the nature of the accident was.

Trevali added that it was also working closely with its contractor to ensure that the miners' families received all possible support. Counselling was being provided for employees and workers on site.

"We are all greatly saddened by this tragic accident … and extend our sincere condolences to their families, friends and colleagues. Safety has always been a top priority for the company and we will ensure this accident is fully investigated," Trevali president and CEO Mark Cruise said in a statement.

Trevali Mining Corporation is in the final stages of construction at its Santander zinc/lead/silver mine in west-central Peru.
