Diamond miner Alrosa has committed about $2.7-million for the construction of houses in the Byas-Kyuel village in the Gorny district of Yakutia, Russia, which has been impacted by forest fires.

“Alrosa is working closely with the Yakut government at this difficult time for the region, providing any help it can. We hope that these funds will enable local communities to soon resume their lives as normal and provide them with support at this difficult time,” says Alrosa CEO Sergey Ivanov.

The funding will be channelled via the Special Fund for Future Generations of the Republic of Sakha, or Yakutia, and will be in addition to Alrosa’s annual contribution to the region.

In February, the company concluded a further collaboration agreement with the fund to provide targeted financial support aimed at addressing pressing social issues in the region. This includes building new cultural, educational, healthcare and sports facilities, world-class education facilities for children and promoting environmental protection.

Alrosa has, for this year, allocated 850-million rubles, or $11.6-million, to these causes.
