Abrasive tools manufacturer PFERD has geared many of its products for Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) and robotic applications because many customers in the local manufacturing and automotive sectors are automating their processes to increase efficiencies. The company is also focusing on providing an overall solution and service. These solutions, with 4IR capabilities, enable the company to assist in streamlining customers’ manufacturing processes, says PFERD national sales manager Dennis Phillips.

Once tools are being used in the 4IR machinery, factors that influence the performance of the tools need to be considered throughout the process, he adds.

“We have our own in-house research and development team that looks at these processes and applications, and we have application specialists to go onto site and assess a customer’s application and recommend possible process improvements.”

If a customer incorporates any new type of tool, PFERD will assist the customer and recommend certain robotic and 4IR-enabled products for a particular application.

The company can also adapt its products to customer-specific 4IR and robotic machine applications, he notes.

A tungsten carbide burr is a cutting tool that is normally used on electric and pneumatic straight grinders.

These burrs are used for cutting, shaping, and for the removal of sharp edges, burrs and excess material.

Phillips suggests that these tools need to be streamlined for use in robotic applications. This is owing to the intense pressures these tools are subjected to when used in these applications.

“For this, we’ve designed and adapted our range of tungsten carbide burrs. We’ve developed these specialised tools for industries, such as the aviation and automotive industry, where they have specific requirements and tolerances.”

In addition, PFERD has a range of tungsten carbide burrs consisting of an anti-wear coating, referred to as “high-coat” coatings. This range of burrs is specifically designed for particularly demanding applications. These coatings assist in reducing heat generation and material build-up while improving the overall chip removal rate during operation.

This, in addition to specific geometric cuts of the tungsten carbide burrs, offers a wide array of possible product solutions that have been specifically adapted for these applications by PFERD. These features can help customers to improve productivity and process flow, and result in a reduction of the processing time required for a specific application.

“There’s a variety of products we can adapt for these applications. Our objective with our range of abrasive tools, is to improve product performance, which means we can optimise the customer’s application to ensure improved efficiencies.”
