Company Announcement - The fourth ASSAf Annual South African Young Scientists’ Conference with the theme Agriculture and Food Security will be held from 14 -16 October 2014 in Pretoria. The conference will primarily attract PhD, postdoctoral, and young, early-career researchers and scientists. This year, the theme of the conference is aligned to the African Union theme for 2014.Agriculture and food security concerns remains high on the policy agenda at national, regional, continental and global levels. Agriculture is recognised by the United Nations as the single largest employer in the world, providing livelihoods for 40 per cent of today’s global population. It is the largest source of income and jobs for poor rural households.

Continentally and nationally, it has been recognised that enhanced agricultural performance is key to growth and poverty reduction through its direct impact on job creation and increasing opportunities, especially for women and for the youth; on food security and improved nutrition; and on building resilience. The conference will provide a platform for young scientists in South Africa to present their research in agriculture and food security, and profile the importance of young scholars’ contribution to agricultural science and research amongst policy-makers.

The ASSAf conference aims to:
• contribute to the development of skills of the postgraduate cadre and the next generation of scientists in South Africa;
• provide networking opportunities for postgraduate students and young scientists conducting research in the same disciplinary field;
• provide a platform for showcasing the country’s young talent;
• provide young scientists with an opportunity for mentorship on science communication;
• provide an opportunity for young scientists to engage with science councils, and other organisations represented at the conference.
