PERTH (miningweekly.com) – The Donaldson mine, in New South Wales, will move to care and maintenance in June this year, following a reduction in mining activities and the start of new feasibility studies.

Owner Yancoal Australia said on Wednesday that the move to care and maintenance was in response to the ongoing global market challenges, as the company considered the future development of new underground working areas at the operation.

From March 14, operations at the Donaldson mine would reduce from three mining units to two at the Abel underground mine, which would result in the termination of ten roles.

The miner was hoping to redeploy affected employees to the neighbouring Ashton underground mine.

However, Yancoal said on Wednesday that it would also offer voluntary redundancies across the Abel, Ashton and Austar underground operations, prior to the move to care and maintenance.

The Abel underground mine produced some 1.81-million tonnes of run-of-mine coal and 1.34-million tonnes of saleable coal in 2015. It currently employs 103 personnel.

It was estimated that only 11 full-time roles would be required to support the operation once it has moved to full care and maintenance, and while Yancoal continued feasibility studies.
