Company Announcement - World Water Works, Inc., a leading designer and manufacturer of wastewater treatment solutions, announces that it has used a Landia submersible mixer as part of the implementation of its DEMON® treatment system at the York River Treatment Plant in Seaford, Virginia. This is the first operating implementation of DEMON® technology in North America, and is installed in a facility of the regional wastewater treatment utility Hampton Roads Sanitation District.

“Mixing is critical for the proper operation of the DEMON® process. The Landia mixer has proven to be highly flexible, reliable, and has significantly improved system efficiency," said Daniel Dair, Regional Technical Manager at World Water Works. DEMON® is an innovative approach to nitrogen removal that has proven efficient, reliable, and extremely cost effective. It offers numerous benefits over traditional nitrification-denitrification systems, including: a 90% reduction in sludge handling volume, a 100% reduction in chemical demand, and a 60% lower energy requirement. The DEMON® system runs a two-step, single stage process that leverages two types of bacteria in order to first oxidize the ammonia in wastewater to nitrite and then convert a combination of this nitrite and remaining ammonia into harmless nitrogen gas. The two types of bacteria used are ammonia oxidizing bacteria and anaerobic ammonium oxidizing bacteria.

Designed to agitate, homogenize and suspend solids in demanding conditions, Landia’s submersible mixer model POP-I is utilized to mix granulated sludge for the HRSD implementation of the DEMON® process. Featuring a propeller that is shaped for optimum flow/homogenization, Landia’s POP-I mixes the DEMON® process’ anammox biomass in a versatile on/off operation, kicking in automatically for the non-aeration cycle.

Serving 17 localities in southeastern Virginia, HRSD was created by public referendum in 1940 to eliminate sewage pollution in the tidal waters of Chesapeake Bay.  As the region has grown and its needs expanded, HRSD has remained dedicated to protecting and enhancing the environment, allowing residents of its communities in Virginia to fully enjoy the benefits of the local waterways.
