JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Consulting companies Earth Systems and Earth Environmental Consultancy have started work in support of baseline studies to support ASX- and JSE-listed Tawana Resources’ environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) studies for the Mofe Creek project, in Liberia.

Tawana noted that local media had broadcast a notice of intent, which was a public briefing document and prerequisite in starting the environmental and social baseline studies.

“This represents an important step towards commencement of the ESIA for the project, and provides the opportunity for principal stakeholders and communities to confirm their support for the project’s development.

“Compilation of in-country data, and the acquisition and review of remote sensing data form an integral part of the baseline studies,” commented Tawana MD Len Kolff

In July, the iron-ore exploration company released the results of a scoping study, which showed the project had the potential to produce about 2.5-million tonnes a year of iron-ore, that it would have an initial mine life of 14 years and would deliver revenue of about $2.5-billion.

The company was expected commercial production at the project to start in 2016.
