The Women in Mining Business South Africa (WiMBIZ) and small surface mining association Aspasa have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote access to procurement, enterprise and supplier development opportunities for women entrepreneurs in the mining sector.

The agreement, effective for a period of five years, aims to empower women entrepreneurs in the mining sector and ensure a pipeline of suitably qualified female entrepreneurs.

Under the terms of the MoU, WiMBIZ will develop an eligibility criterion for its members to ensure they have the competencies and capabilities to participate in procurement opportunities within Aspasa member companies. It will also offer support, including mentorship, to the entrepreneurs.

The two industry bodies expect the MoU to promote gender diversity and inclusivity in the mining sector, and foster the growth of women-owned businesses in the industry.

“This MoU represents a significant milestone for us and a big win for women entrepreneurs in the mining sector. We are confident that this partnership will provide opportunities for women in the mining sector to participate in Aspasa’s procurement opportunities, and we are excited about the opportunity to empower women entrepreneurs in the mining sector through targeted enterprise and supplier development opportunities,” says WiMBIZ chairperson Makhosazana Sibisi.

“We are looking forward to this collaboration to accelerate a supply chain that offers opportunities to women, specifically in small surface mines. Empowerment cannot just happen within the mining boundaries with employees. In this struggling economy we find ourselves in, it is paramount that we support entrepreneurs. We are confident that we will soon have success stories to tell as a result of this agreement," adds Aspasa director Letisha van den Berg.
