PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed West Wits Mining on Monday warned shareholders that Lawyers for Human Rights had lodged an appeal to the South African Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) against the grant of a mining right over the Witwatersrand Basin project (WBP).

West Wits last week told shareholders that it would begin the process of obtaining a new prospecting right to the south of the recently granted mining right at the WBP.

West Wits noted that the appeal had been lodged out of time, and would need an extension of that time in order to proceed.

“This appeal will not succeed and must fail just as the environmental appeals failed. It should be noted that the current appeal does not in any way suspend the mining right, and the company can continue with its development plans,” said West Wits non-executive director Hulme Scholes.

Scholes noted that the appeal recycled previously raised concerns, which had been rejected by the DMRE and the Environment Minister.
