Perth-based WA1 Resources has secured major project status from the Australian government for its Luni niobium project.

Federal Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres granted the designation for a period of three years, formally recognising Luni as a project of national significance.

WA1 said the recognition underscored Luni’s potential to strengthen Australia’s sovereign capability in niobium, a critical mineral used in high-strength steels, advanced manufacturing and clean-energy technologies, while also delivering substantial regional economic benefits.

MD Paul Savich said the government’s decision reflected both the scale and strategic importance of the project.

“The scale and grade of Luni make it the most important niobium discovery globally in the past 70 years and deserving of its place as a project of national significance,” Savich commented.

“This designation reinforces the project’s potential to deliver meaningful benefits for Australia and for regional communities, and we look forward to continuing our constructive engagement with both the federal and state governments.”

Luni has rapidly gained industry attention following WA1’s discovery of high-grade niobium mineralisation in Western Australia’s West Arunta region.
