JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Trade unions, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Uasa, this week, entered into a two-year wage agreement with Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) at several operations.

The increases would be backdated from July and paid only to NUM, Uasa and non-union members on December 19.

In the first year, workers in categories A to B2 and C to D1 would receive a wage increase of 8.5% and 7.5% respectively, while the second year would result in an increase of 8%.

Categories B3 to B7 workers would receive an 8% wage increase in the first and second years.

The NUM said in a statement that wage increases would result in automatic hikes for allowances, including shift, standby, acting, Sunday premium, Sunday night shift, early start and overtime.

The deal would apply to Amplats workers at the Thembelani, Bathopele, Siphumelele, Dishaba, Tumela, Union, Mogalakwena and Twickenham mines, as well as those at the Waterval, Mortimer and Polokwane smelter complexes, the Precious Metals and Rustenburg Base Metals refiners and the Rustenburg, Union, Amandelbult, Mototolo and Mogalakwena concentrators.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported on Friday that the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union now represented 60% of employees across Amplats’ operations. This was up from the union’s 40% representation in July.
