Chinese light rare earths and heavy rare earths production is expected to decline 1% month-on-month in April and May, owing to weakness in the dysprosium market. With respect to export prices, heavy rare earths are expected to decline by 2% month-on-month in April and light rare earths are expected to remain flat. This is owing to a seasonal slowdown over the Easter holiday period. In addition, the release of Chinese production quota has allayed buyers’ fears of a rare earth shortage caused by changes to Chinese rare earth policies.

Core Consultants, using Creamer Media as a platform, has published a guide, in the form of a global monthly report, to traverse the rare earths market. The report keeps abreast of the latest industry trends. The main topics in this month’s report include:
• The near completion of China’s consolidation of its rare earths industry into six main conglomerates;
• Countries considering mining legislation to accelerate the timeframe required for opening new mines; and
• The rare earths outlook for May.
