SNR initiates operational review of Elitheni mine
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Aim-listed Strategic Natural Resources (SNR) on Monday reported that key delivery targets had been missed at the Eastern Cape-based Elitheni coal mine of its 74%-owned subsidiary Elitheni Coal.
This resulted in a failure to meet planned coal shipments to offtake partner Trasteel International South Africa for late January and early February.
The natural resources developer said challenges at Elitheni included wash plant engineering and commissioning issues, as well as ongoing optimisation and supply chain challenges.
SNR added that these were attributable to the establishment of the first mine in the Eastern Cape in over a century and emphasised that it had implemented a full operational review to strengthen the management and production capabilities at Elitheni.
“The board has already allocated and will continue to provide all necessary support and resources to ensure that local management complete the project start-up phase within the shortest possible timeframe,” the company said in a statement on Monday.
SNR said it was currently working with Trasteel to firm up a new delivery schedule for its coal in the second quarter of the year.
