SHOOTING FROM THE HIP

African National Congress (ANC) secretary-general Gwede Mantashe accused Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) of theft during his phone-in to an oft-heated Xolani Gwala-hosted national radio debate on SAfm's AMLive. “They have stolen our money,” the pugnacious Mantashe reiterated, suggesting that Amplats had helped itself to South African capital and labour's sweat equity to foot the bill for its costly London listing. “The fact is you steal our money and you become a British company,” said the foremost ruling ANC official, who warned Amplats to desist from treating South Africa as a junior partner. “You engage partners in South Africa and then, as an outcome of that engagement, you make a pronouncement, not before,” Matashe enjoined, in condemnation of what he saw as a unilateral Amplats decision to close two mines, suspend four shafts, sell Union mine and put 14 000 jobs at risk.
