PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Lithium miner Sayona Mining has marked another milestone at the North American Lithium (NAL) operation, in Québec, with 30 000 t of lithium concentrate now produced.

“Since restarting production in March 2023, we have worked hard to ensure a successful production ramp‐up and we continue to deliver speed and tonnage ahead of schedule. This is an amazing achievement in the lithium industry given recent supply chain and cost challenges,” Sayona MD Brett Lynch said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sayona is building stockpile at port ahead of its first planned shipment in July this year.

The company told shareholders that during the ramp-up phase, an assessment to determine the optimal product lithium grade versus recoveries from the process plant was undertaken. The mine production and process plant output to date has shown that the current spodumene concentrate product grade of circa 5.5% lithium oxide delivers higher recoveries and more tonnes of spodumene concentrate, therefore maximising profitability to the NAL joint venture.

Sayona is targeting total NAL spodumene concentrate production of between 85 000 t and 115 000 t during the first half of the 2024 financial year. At full production, the 1.5-million-tonne-a-year NAL operation could deliver 4.4-million tonnes of spodumene concentrate over a mine life of 27 years.

The company is also planning additional drilling in 2023, with more than 50 000 m of drilling planned at both NAL and at the adjacent Valleé lithium project.
