Name of the project and location
Sanje Hill iron-ore project, Zambia.

Project description
Universal Mining & Chemical Industries (UMCIL) is investing in a 200 000 t/y integrated iron and steel works at Kafue.

The project is to be implemented on a backward integration in phases starting first with a steel mill to process iron and steel scraps into various rolled products to include round bars, angles, channels and strip. The initial plant capacity will be 100 000 t/y output.

In the second phase, a sponge iron plant (a direct reduction plant) is to be added to the steel plant to convert iron oxide ore into sponge iron to make up for the scrap deficit. This entails development of an iron oxide ore plant at Sanje Hill hematite deposit and the construction of a road from the mine to the steel mill. This addition of the sponge iron plant will result in an increased capacity of 200 000 t/y of iron and steel products.

In the final stage of the project, a 80 000-t ferroalloy plant will be added.
