R400m Cape Town investment enables Astron Energy to meet global deadline on new marine fuel
This article has been supplied.
Ships docking in Cape Town harbour are loading up with low sulphur fuel oil that meets stringent new International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations.
After a major investment of around R400 million, Astron Energy’s Milnerton refinery is producing the Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO) which has a sulphur content of 0.5% compared to previous levels of 3.5%.
Astron Energy met IMO’s demanding global deadline of 1 January 2020 for the new product and is now supplying ship owners and maritime operators with VLSFO through the Port of Cape Town, which is the second busiest in the country. Astron Energy’s VLSO fuel is also available at Richard’s Bay.
“This is a major transition for two important global industries – shipping and refining”, says Astron Energy’s CEO, Jonathan Molapo. “Making sure Cape Town had VLSFO that met the new regulations available by 1 January was vital for the company and the port. We have worked extremely hard to implement the substantial and complex changes that were required in our refining processes.”
Molapo hails IMO 2020 as a major step forward for the marine environment and says he is proud that Astron Energy has ensured that Cape Town was compliant on schedule. “The port is critical for the local and national export economy and we knew how important it was to get this right.”
