Platinum group metals miner Wesizwe Platinum says all employees who participated in an illegal sit-in at the Bakubung mine in the North West last week, had returned to surface at 23:00 on Friday night.

This followed discussions between mine management and union leadership.

All employees were given medical checkups and cleared.

The sit-in started on December 6, with employees protesting over proposed plans to retrench the majority of employees at the mine.

By Friday afternoon, more than 250 employees had remained underground after union leadership had gone underground to bring 28 employees with chronic illnesses to surface.
