PPC empowering South African women in construction

South Africa’s pandemic economy has highlighted the opportunities that exist for women to bring the economy forward. The South African construction industry is making paces in gender parity, according to the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB). Revealing figures that 48% of South Africa’s construction companies are now owned by women, Mandisa Mjo, one of South Africa’s women in construction has actively worked to empower her community through her business.

As the owner of Sisters Bricks and Blocks Construction, Mandisa Mjo pursued her dream of becoming a reputable businesswoman in brick and block making. She was a teacher for 9 years and quit her job to start her brick making business in Port Elizabeth in 2002.

“Construction remains a male-dominated industry but there are signs that women are starting to become better represented in this sector - to its great potential benefit. Unsurprisingly, given the nature of the work itself, women are primarily making their mark in managerial and administrative roles, and a growing number of smaller construction companies are headed by women,” explains Mandisa Mjo. “It is for this reason that I want other women in construction to be encouraged to pursue their goals and be successful. While my construction business has been in existence for a year, determination and hard work has seen me open three (3) brickyards sites over one year”.

Sisters Bricks and Blocks Construction is currently manufacturing three types of bricks which are hallowed brick, stock brick and divider; and employs a total of 32 people in the areas where they operate. The increase in production has helped Sisters Bricks and Blocks Construction with the business’s economic structures, growing the business and increasing employment in their community. This has enabled the business to do its part in assisting in closing the unemployment gap in their community and surrounding areas.

“The continued participation of our people into the township economy has remained a motivator for us to reinvest into the entrepreneurial efforts we encounter daily. For this reason, we see the work we do as being key to creating an enabling environment for us all. Forming part of PPC’s commitment to empowering the community to experience a better quality of life, efforts to improve access to the market with each brick making and paving machine increases the capacity to grow the business. We have worked with Mandisa Mjo and her team to ensure we leverage our shared passion or excellence to drive a 100% local business that is committed to providing 100% quality products to the Port Elizabeth community,” says Johan Venter, Head of Coastal Business Unit at PPC.

“The Technical and Business support from PPC has been amazing, especially that we are facing a different and unprecedented challenges as SMMEs. The relationship with PPC means a lot to my business as and I’ve seen how my business has grown since the start of the relationship and I’ve managed to create more employment. Through their technical support I have been able to produce better quality, more cost-effective bricks, which makes me more competitive in the market,” says Mandisa Mjo, founder of Sisters Bricks and Blocks Construction

Taking the lessons that have come from operating in South Africa over the past 128 years, PPC remains optimistic about the opportunities that exist in the sector. The business’ decision to make this investment into SMME’s, as part of its Enterprise Supplier Development (ESD) during a post-pandemic environment, has proven to be an example of PPC’s ongoing investment in the community.
