An innovation that purifies water using solar power offers a number of functions, including a portable handwashing station, warm shower and source of clean drinking water.

The unit serves as a sink and, with available upgrades, can be converted into a portable shower that provides clean, hot water. The all-in-one unit includes a tap, pump, filter, power bank and solar panels. It can also be powered by a USB outlet.

Small enough to fit into a backpack, the GoSun Flow is said to be the world’s first portable solar-powered water purification system.

The crowd-funded solar product from US-based cleantech company GoSun, is part of its range of solar-powered outdoor gear and is available for pre-order online. The company states that the unit uses solar energy to filter 99.99% of pathogens from water and is seen as a tool in the fight against Covid-19, providing accessible and clean hand-washing facilities in remote areas or for outdoor activities such as camping.

Other products in the range include solar-powered cookers, lighting, batteries and coolers. Each product purchased from the company results in the planting of two trees, through its partnership with Trees for the Future, with over 40 000 trees planted to date.
